Factor D is unique to the Alternative Complement Pathway. It consists of a single peptide chain with a molecular weight of 24 kD. Factor D is a specific serine protease which cleaves Factor B complexed with C3b (or hydrolyzed C3) in a single position to yield Bb and Ba.

Applications of Anti-Human Factor D antisera have been evalsuated, and include immunodiffusion, Western Blot and ELISA.
