Recombinant and native human granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor, a glycoprotein which stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic progenitor cells and the growth of granulocyte-macrophage colony-forming cells. The cDNA which encodes human GM-CSF was recently cloned and the nucleotide and amino acid sequence of the cytokine determined. The GM-CSF molecule is a 14 to 15 kilodalton polypeptide which contains two internal disulfide bonds which are important in the maintenance of its structure. Two asparagine residues serve as potential glycosylation sites and thereby contribute to the molecule's size heterogeneity.
