Description
The ViPrimePLUS Brucella abortus qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Brucella abortus genomes in clinical samples (e.g. blood, milk, body fluids) from animal and human or animal aborted fetuses.
Brucella spp. are Gram negative bacteria, which cause Brucellosis in both animals and humans. In livestock, they are the main cause of abortion affecting the economy tremendously. There are four different species that affect humans; 1) Brucella melitensis from goats, sheep, and camels is the most prevalsent worldwide, 2) Brucella suis from pigs, 3) Brucella abortus from cattle, buffalo, elk, camel and yak, and 4) Brucella canis from dogs. This zoonotic infection spreads from animal to human via contact with or ingestion of infected animals and animal products, especially the unpasteurized milk. Breast-feeding, sexual transmission and organ transplantation are potential methods of person-to-person transmission though the incidences are rare. Generally, brucellosis in human presents a flu-like symptoms and treatment is usually effective with antibiotics. In severe cases, complications involving various organs may follow with ~2% mortality rate. To prevent the potential outbreak, animal vaccination (human vaccine is currently unavailable), animal routine screening and good animal-disease control are important practices.
