Description
The ViPrimePLUS Klebsiella pneumoniae qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Klebsiella pneumoniae genomes in clinical samples (e.g. throat swab, cerebrospinal fluid, sputum and blood).
In the Klebsiella genus, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Klebsiella oxytoca are the most clinically significant pathogens. K. pneumoniae is a Gram negative, rod bacterium, which is a part of the normal flora in the gastrointestinal tract. It colonizes the skin, pharynx and the urinary tract as well by evading the host defense system. Being an opportunistic pathogen, the infection is common among the elderly, immunocompromised patients and alcoholics, where the host immune system is weakened. The clinical manifestations include pneumonia (most common), meningitis, bacteremia, urinary tract infection, and liver abscess. In recent years, K. pneumoniae has become an important pathogen in nosocomial infections, being responsible for the 3-7% of all nosocomial bacterial infections. The emergence of carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae has limited the choice of treatment of the infection.
