The ViPrimePLUS Mycoplasma pneumoniae qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of the Mycoplasma pneumoniae genomes in clinical samples (e.g. nasopharyngeal fluid, sputum and throat swab).
Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a small bacterium which lacks a cell wall, and thus does not Gram stain. It infects the mucosal membrane of the upper and lower respiratory tract, causing dry cough, sore throat, fever and the more serious tracheobronchitis and atypical pneumonia. The incubation period is long with gradual onset of symptoms. Absence of cough at the initial stage often makes diagnosis difficult. The later persistent, progressive cough stage usually goes on for 3 weeks or more. Aside from Chlamydophila pneumoniae and Legionella pneumophila, M. pneumoniae is one of the atypical pathogens that are responsible for the 20-30% cases of the community-acquired pneumonia, particularly in children and *****s (typically 40 years old and younger). Patients with sickle cell anemia and young children are more prone to more severe complications. Due to the indistinctive features of the illness, real time PCR detection assay of the pathogen is well sought after.
