The ViPrimePLUS Porphyromonas gingivalis qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of the Porphyromonas gingivalis genomes in clinical samples.
Porphyromonas gingivalis is an anaerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile, Gram-negative bacterium. Infection with this bacterium can lead to gingivitis and periodontitis. The bacterium resides in the mouth within the gingival and is known to cause inflammation of this soft tissue. P. gingivalis adheres to the gum layer using the fimbriae and once attached to the gingiva, the bacterium interacts with other bacteria present here and in doing so, form a biofilm known as plaque. If left untreated, the plaque can lead to the formation of lesions between the tooth and the gingival layer. The bacterium is also able to express proteolytic enzymes, which attack the ligaments that hold the tooth and gum together. The continuation of such process eventually results in the loosening of the tooth from the gum and bone, and potentially resulting in the loss of the tooth. Symptoms caused by the infection with P. gingivalis include inflammation of gums that cause redness and may be painful, and bad breath.
