Description
The ViPrimePLUS Vibrio cholerae qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of V. cholerae genomes in clinical samples (e.g. stool) and food or water samples.
Vibrio cholerae is a Gram negative, comma-shaped bacterium which causes infectious gastroenteritis known as cholera. It is a very common travelers' disease caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water. Large infectious dose is needed to overcome the gastric acid disinfection to cause disease. Among the clinical symptoms are vomiting and profuse, rice-like, watery diarrhea. Dehydration is the main cause of death in cholera patients if treatment is not provided. There are more than 200 serotypes but V. cholerae O1 and O139 are the principal cause of epidemic cholera. The general pathogenesis of toxigenic V. cholerae involves the production of cholera toxin that stimulates the epithelium lining of the small intestines to enhance secretion of fluids and electrolytes into the lumen. Human and aquatic environment both serve as the reservoirs for the pathogen. Therefore, routine screening is important to ensure safe water supply.
