Description
The ViPrimePLUS Balamuthia mandrillaris qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of B. mandrillaris species genomes in clinical samples (e.g. cerebrospinal fluid and lesions) or environmental samples (e.g. soil and water).
Balamuthia mandrillaris is the new emerging opportunistic human pathogen which causes encephalitis known as Balamuthia amoebic encephalitis (BAE) that recorded a fatality rate of >98%. Unlike Acanthamoeba infection, Balamuthia infections affect both immunocompromised and healthy individuals. Entry via skin breaks may lead to serious cutaneous damage such as lesions formation. The infection is sporadic and unpredictable as the predisposing factors have yet been found. Thus, early diagnosis of the disease is difficult through clinical presentation owing to poor prognosis.
