Description
The ViPrimePLUS Equid Herpesvirus 1 qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Equid Herpesvirus 1 genome in nasal samples and blood.
Equine herpesvirus (EHV) is a very common double- stranded DNA virus found in the horse population. There are two common strains known, i.e. EHV-1 which causes abortion, respiratory and neurological diseases, and EHV-4, which mainly causes respiratory diseases but rarely abortion. Infected young, weaned foals and yearlings are more prone to developing respiratory disease, while older horses tend to be asymptomatic carriers. Equine herpesvirus myeloencephalitis (EHM) affects 20-50% of the population. However, the underlying mechanism and risk factors of the central nervous system infection by the virus are still unknown although older horses are more susceptible to EHM. Latency is commonly established in the young horses within the first months of life. The subsequent viral reactivation leads to recurrent disease and viral shedding during stress periods. There are no effective vaccines available currently.
