Description
The ViPrimePLUS Cyprinid Herpesvirus 3 qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Cyprinid Herpesvirus 3 genome in fish samples and environmental samples (e.g. water).
Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3), also known as the Koi herpesvirus, is an emerging DNA virus that spreads in natural lakes and rivers, causing fatal diseases among common carp and Koi fish. Study shows that goldfish, grass carp, and tench can carry CyHV-3 asymptomatically. This highly contagious pathogen has caused major financial losses in the common and koi carp culture industry globally. The viral particles are shed in faeces and secretions that are released into the water body and enter the body through the skin pores. Fish may also be infected by skin-skin contact during grazing and spawning or when they pick on the skin lesion of the infected fish. The disease will only manifest in optimal water temperature, i.e. 18-28oC. Outside of the optimal condition, the virus will remain latent until conditions are conducive for propagation. Clinical signs include loss of appetite, sunken eyes, lethargy, gill necrosis and hyperaemia. Excessive mucous secretion by the gills may suffocate the fish. Most of the juveniles (>13days post hatching) died from the disease. The mortality rate can reach up to 80-100%. Real time PCR provides a sensitive and specific identification tool of the virus infection outbreak.
