Description
The ViPrimePLUS Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia Virus RT-qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia Virus genome in fish samples (all tissues including skin and muscles or fluids).
Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia Virus (VHSV) is a RNA virus which causes the acute Egtved disease in rainbow trout, farmed turbot, farmed Japanese flounder and a diverse group of wild freshwater and marine fish. There are 4 genotypes identified of the VHSV, each with distinct geographical distribution. Shedding of virus in secretions and excretions contributes to the waterborne transmission although direct contact transmission is also possible. Rapid onset of mortality (which can reach 100% in fry), skin darkening, exophthalmia, anemia, haemorrhage under the skin and base of fins and abdominal distension are the general signs observed from the infected fish. In chronic state, the infection can be asymptomatic. Infection of the nervous system may cause abnormal swimming behaviour. Survivors will become life-long carrier of the disease. VHS outbreaks have been reported in both freshwater and seawater environments with salinities up to 36ppt and at temperatures ranging from 2 to 20°C. Currently, no commercial vaccine is available, therefore routine screening and sanitation practice is essential to prevent outbreaks.
