Description
The ViPrimePLUS Theileria annulata qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Theileria annulata genome in clinical samples such as blood.
Theileriosesis in domesticated ruminants is a major economic concern as it resulted in 90% mortality rate in introduced and exotic breeds from non-endemic areas. In indigenous animals, 100% morbidity rate while less than 5% mortality rate is observed. The disease is caused by the tick-borne Theileria sp. parasites. The two important species which affects cattle and water buffalo are T. parva which causes East Coast fever and T. annulata which causes tropical and Mediterranean theileriosesis. T. lestoquardi (formerly T. hirci) is the most virulent species in sheep and goats, with 46-100% mortality rate. Others may also infect ruminants but they are mostly asymptomatic. The clinical signs of East Coast fever include lymphadenopathy, fever, anorexia and produce low milk yield. In severe, fatal condition, some cattle may develop pulmonary edema and neurological signs (also known as “turning sickness”). The tropical theileriosesis symptoms are similar to the East Coast fever with the addition of jaundice, anemia and haemoglobinuria as the parasite is haemolytic. Recovered animals may become asymptomatic carriers or have poor productivity and stunted growth
