Description
The ViPrimePLUS Bluetongue Virus 8 RT-qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Bluetongue Virus 8 genome in blood, spleen and liver tissue samples.
Bluetongue Virus (BTV) is a double stranded RNA virus which causes the infectious but non-contagious disease in ruminants such as sheep, cattle, deer, goats and camels. There are 24 recognized serotypes worldwide, where each prevails in different geographical regions. The primary mode of transmission of the disease is via midges (genus Culicoides). Once the virus enters the host, it tends to reside in the red blood cells and other cells to evade the host immune reaction, prolonging viremia. Cattle are the major reservoir of the infection due to its extended viremia and host preference by midges. In infected sheep and some deer species, the clinical signs include fever, excessive salivation, lameness, depression, dyspnoea, mucopurulent nasal discharge, ulceration and swelling of the tongue, and cyanotic tongue (blue tongue). However, infected cattle and goats usually have inapparent symptoms. Abortion and the birth of abnormal calves or lambs may occur. BTV serotype 8 has been isolated in America, Africa and Europe and causes serious disease in cattle and goats. There are evidences of vertical transmission and sexual transmission via contaminated semen of this serotype but they are not exclusive.
