Description
The ViPrimePLUS Chlamydophila psittaci qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Chlamydophila psittaci genome in clinical samples (e.g. respiratory swabs or bodily fluids).
Chlamydophila psittaci infects both human and avian, causing psittacosis and avian chlamydiosesis respectively. Most infection in human is due to exposure to pet psittacine birds in the form of aerosols, bird bites, or mouth-to-beak contact. It will lead to pneumonia and ornithosis, while some cases of endocarditis, myocarditis, hepatitis, arthritis, keratoconjunctivitis, and encephalitis may occur, too. C. psittaci infection in birds can be asymptomatic and be carriers that shed the pathogen intermittently in feces or nasal discharge. Others may exhibit acute, subacute, or chronic clinical disease, with signs of lethargy, anorexia, and ruffled feathers. There are 8 known serovars of C. psittaci, and each is associated with a different order of birds e.g., serovars A and F in psittacines, B in pigeons and doves, and C in ducks and geese. Certain strains may infect sheep, goats and cattle, causing chronic infection of the reproductive tract, placental insufficiency, and abortion. Another strain of C. psittaci, feline keratoconjunctivitis agent, typically causes rhinitis and conjunctivitis in cats. Treatment is usually with tetracycline or macrolides for human.
